Is It Time for a Change? A Guide to Knowing When It’s Time to Start Your Job Search
Making the decision to look for a new job isn’t easy. It’s a big step that often comes with feelings of uncertainty, especially if you're not sure what you're looking for or why. That’s why taking the time for some honest self-reflection before you start the process is so important. Understanding your motivating forces and future goals will empower you to make decisions with confidence and focus.
Not sure where to start? We've put together a guide with key questions to help you assess whether it’s time to move on and clarify what you truly want from your next opportunity.
Step One: Evaluate Your Current Job Satisfaction
One of the simplest ways to determine if it’s time for a change is to think about the things you’d like to change about your current role or company. Take a moment to reflect and answer this question honestly:
“If I had a magic wand, what are 3-5 things I’d change about my role or organization?”
Think beyond surface frustrations and consider deeper issues like support from leadership, growth opportunities, workload, or cultural fit. Write down your answers. Now, explore the following questions to dig deeper:
How would these changes allow me to meet my personal or professional goals?
For example, if you want more flexibility, would that help you spend more time with loved ones? If you’d prefer different leadership, would it make your work environment healthier or more productive?
Are these changes attainable in my current work environment?
Is it realistic to expect your organization to meet these needs, or have you already tried to improve the situation without success?
By answering these questions, you'll start to understand whether the main issues you’re facing can be resolved where you are, or if they are strong enough to justify exploring what’s next.
Step Two: Define What Gets You Excited About a New Opportunity
Finding the right fit for your next role begins with clarity. Ask yourself, “What would make me excited enough to apply, take a recruiter’s call, or interview for a role?” The goal here is to be as specific as possible so you can recognize a great opportunity when it comes along. Consider these factors:
Pay – What salary range would make you feel valued and comfortable?
Title – Does a specific title reflect your career goals or growth ambitions?
Type of Work – Are there certain tasks, projects, or responsibilities you’re eager to take on?
Location and Flexibility – Do you need remote or hybrid options? Would you consider a commute or relocation?
Benefits and Perks – Healthcare, PTO, parental leave, professional development—what’s a priority for you?
Industry – Are you looking to stay in your current field or switch to something new?
Once you’ve listed your must-haves, think about how these elements align with your goals by asking:
“How would opportunities like these help me meet my professional or personal goals?”
Does a higher salary help you save for long-term plans? Does a hybrid role provide the balance you’re craving?
Next, assess whether these new opportunities are attainable based on your current skills and experiences. If there’s a gap between where you are now and where you want to be, what steps would you need to take to close it? Do you need to update your resume, earn a certification, or focus on skill-building before making the leap? Identifying these gaps will make your job search more strategic.
Step Three: Decide Your Next Move
By answering these questions, you’ll be able to clearly see two things:
1.Should I start looking for a new role?
If the changes you want most aren't possible in your current job or company, it’s likely time to explore other opportunities.
2. What am I looking for?
Understanding your key motivators—whether that's better pay, more flexibility, or meaningful work—will allow you to focus your job search on roles that align with your goals and values.
Taking the time to reflect on these questions helps you approach the job search with clarity, confidence, and a sense of purpose. Not only will this save you time and effort, it will also ensure your next step is one that supports both your career and personal aspirations.
Remember, making a change isn’t about running away from a bad situation—it’s about moving toward something better for you. You deserve a role that excites you, aligns with your goals, and allows you to thrive.
